that there is a director of the atf might solve a little bit of that problem. let's move on to harry reid because harry reid has been asked about gun patrol. control. he has been asked by george stephanopoulos. and here's what he had to say about it. >> would you vote for it? >> i didn't vote for the assault weapons last time because it didn't make sense but i'll take a look at it. >> now here is the important thing to remember about harry reid. he's facing a little bit of a conundrum because there is what is good for the country and what his constituents in nevada wants. and of course in nevada they're very much pro gun. and he is very much pro gun himself. it is very unlikely that he's well to support an assault weapons ban. but he was also talking about background checks. let's hear what he said about that. >> everyone acknowledged that we should have universal background checks. i support the second amendment but you can do things like that. >> michael, what are your thoughts. do you think harry reid will take the lead on gun control? >> i don't think he'll take the lead, but he's the smartest poli

a balanced budget amendment the kind of things that endear people in the republican primary voter. and harry reid spent more money than any of the other candidates in order to get the weakest republican into the general election knowing that they had a very difficult uphill fight in missouri and sure enough they got the weakest candidate and he blew himself up with the infamous current about illegitimate rape. >> you say it is to put in more quote electable candidates. the conservative wing of the republican party says the most eledgable is the most moderate and that is not necessarily the people they want to see running for office. >> lock, look, looking, look, look, look, let's be clear about this. cross roads support for tea party candidates. we are the largest financial backers of tea party candidates for the senate and the house. we spent over $30 million for tea party senate candidate. over $25 million for house candidates. $2.9 million for marco rubio. more than any other group in the general election. $2.7 million for rand paul. $8 million in colorado for ken buck. $5.1 million in ne

tomorrow. now, harry reid filed a motion to limit debate and force a vote. even though hagel is a former republican senator, it's his fellow republicans who have been strongly opposing his nomination. now, democrats hold 55 seats in the senate. but they need five republican votes to move ahead with hagel's confirmation. >>> this morning, former secretary of state, hillary clinton is being honored at the pentagon. we're watching the pentagon this morning. defense secretary leon panetta will be hosting the event on his last day in office. hillary clinton is being honored for her four years as secretary of state during which she traveled more than 1 million miles and visited 1 -- 112 countries. >>> in just hours, the national rifle association will directly respond to president obama's state of the union address. the nra rejects the president's gun control proposal. as kyla campbell reports from our washington, d.c. newsroom, this is all happening as the california congresswoman joins other moms against gun violence today. >> reporter: jackie speier is joining with group moms rising which h

the sound bite from majority leader harry reid but he said he grew up in a town filled with brothels. you know he's from nevada near las vegas area and so he's used to quote salty language and so this didn't offend him but he said, wolf, that the speaker should know who is sitting on their posterior. if this is the language they are using before the cuts go into effect this may be a more exciting story. >> how effective has the president been in delivering this hard hitting message basically totally blaming the republicans for refusing to compromise? >> well, the goal here is to make this really feel, make americans realize how much this will hit home and how much the budget cuts will impact their own pocketbook. the latest polling shows that's had mixed results. right now 60, 6-0 percent of americans believe these forced spending cuts will hurt the overall economy. only 30% think it will have a major impact on their own personal finances. and politicians, insiders, both democrats and republicans tell me they think more americans have to really feel it in the pocketbook before democrats a

with harry reid and urge the senate democrats to take action. the president says this is a bad idea, but yet he's not put forward an alternative idea. the republicans in the house have twice taken action, twice passed legislation. the first time 300 days ago. what we need is for the president to stop using this as an excuse to raise taxes and turn it into an opportunity to start saving taxpayer dollars, start spending money more wisely. the american people, moms, dads, seniors, college students, children, they shouldn't be forced to lose their jobs or lose the opportunities that this country has to offer. it's time to get serious about the spending, and we need the president to lead and get off the campaign trail. >> a proud kansan by the name of william allen white once said something to the effect that the truth will always come out as the facts are fairly and honestly on display. so let's review the facts. the facts are the sequester was the president's idea. it's a fact the house has twice passed legislation to replace the sequester with smarter cuts and reforms. it's a fact that the sen
